Boost Your Workout and Exercise with Essential Oils!

You’ve heard all about my passion for aromatherapy, but there’s something else that I absolutely love — Zumba™.  I actually teach a Zumba™ class six times a week, and on top of that, I also make time for Barre classes and weight training.  On average, I spend about 10 hours of every week exercising, and I love it!

But I couldn’t do it without my essential oils.

Most people don’t think to combine aromatherapy with exercise, but once you try it, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it!  Best of all, no matter what kind of exercise you love — running, lifting weights, competitive sports, dancing — aromatherapy can help you bring your “A game” every time.

How can the right essential oils boost your fitness routine?

–  They provide pain relief

If you exercise a lot, you typically pay the price, in the form of muscle soreness and strain on your joints.  When I’m feeling achy, I take a relaxing foot bath. 

Forget the fancy spa equipment!  All you need is a large bowl or plastic bin.  (If you want to make it a little more luxurious, place a layer of round stones at the bottom.)  Pour enough hot water into the bowl to cover your feet and ankles.  Then, mix a cup of baking soda with 2 drops each of Geranium, Rosemary, and Cypress oils, and pour the mixture into your bowl.  Let your feet soak for about 10 minutes.  If you’ve got the stones, roll your feet over them while they soak.  Either way, when you’re done, you’ll feel completely rejuvenated!

–  They can prevent pain from popping up in the first place

Wouldn’t it be nice to bypass pain altogether?!  Luckily, essential oils do a great job of maintaining your muscle tone and boosting your circulation so that your workout doesn’t leave you limping.  Personally, I love to massage my muscles with Pain Begone Body Oil, because it’s so good at preventing cramps and sprains. 

A good essential oil massage can help prevent muscle spasms, fluid retention, and swelling because it stimulates your circulation and your lymphatic flow.  (And, yes, it will give you relief if you massage afterwards, instead of beforehand!)  Just be sure to massage gently, in long strokes, and always in the direction of your heart.

–  They help you concentrate better

In order to teach my Zumba™ class, I have to know 10 different dance choreographies like the back of my hand.  Learning them and then performing them definitely requires concentration!  To give my mind a boost, I spray 2 mists of Alerta Body Mist onto my face before each class.  After a few deep breaths of this Peppermint-Rosemary-Spearmint blend, I’m ready to go!  I love this Mist so much that I keep a bottle nearby during my classes, so that I always have access to an easy pick-me-up.

–  They help you get into “The Zone”

Whether you run for fun or you play competitive sports, you likely know what “The Zone” is.  It’s the best way to sum up how you feel when your mind is completely clear, and all you’re focusing on is the athletic task at hand.  As a result, being in “The Zone” can help you achieve things you never thought possible — like a new personal best on the running trail or a big victory in your recreational softball league.

Personally, I get into “The Zone” by using calming (NOT sedative!) oils like Lemongrass, Orange, and Cedarwood.  All you need to do place a drop of each on a tissue, and breathe in deeply.  As you inhale and exhale, visualize yourself having a great game, a great run, a great class, etc.
