From that garlic you cooked last night, to the dog’s muddy feet, it doesn’t take much for strange smells to pop up around your home.  But whether you’re fighting a certain odor or you simply want to get rid of that stale smell, synthetic air fresheners AREN’T the way to go.

I know… the commercials make them seem like little gifts from the heavens.  A few sprays, and your home smells fresh and vibrant.  Unfortunately, what those commercials DON’T mention is that these air fresheners are full of dangerous chemicals that can cause everything from migraines to asthma attacks.  Plus, synthetic air fresheners don’t remove odors.  They only mask them!

So, how do you keep your home smelling great?

With natural air fresheners that are made with essential oils!

Natural Air freshener

After all, essential oils don’t just smell good; they also give your body a boost.  Whether you want to feel more energized or eliminate the day’s stresses, essential oils can do it.  So, they’re the perfect things to use to freshen up the air around your home!

You can even tailor your essential oils to the specific mood you’re trying to create in each room.

For example, if you want to turn your bedroom into a relaxing oasis, tap into the power of Cedarwood, Lemongrass, or Lavender.

Want to kick things up a notch in your living room for that party you’re throwing?  Use festive oils, like Orange, Clary Sage, Geranium, or Litsea Cubeba.

Want your kids to feel rejuvenated when they sit down to do their homework?  Place a natural air freshener made with Peppermint and Lemon essential oil in their rooms.

You can even give your sex life a boost by using Ylang Ylang, Jasmine, or Patchouli oils in your bedroom!

The great thing about essential oils is that they’re not overpowering.  When you use the right recipes (which we’ll go over in just a minute), your natural air fresheners will be like soft background music.  You won’t really think about them consciously, but they’ll definitely help the mood in the room!

OK, so how do you create these natural air fresheners?

There are several different DIY options to choose from, and they’re all easy to create:

1.  Room spray
natural air fresheners

Fill a 4 oz glass bottle with 1 tablespoon white vinegar and distilled water.  Then, add 20 drops of your favorite blend of oils.  A spritz or two will give your room a fresh feeling anytime odor starts to creep in.

2.  Aromatherapy burner

Vaporizing is a great way to infuse a room with scent, without overpowering your senses.  Simply fill the burner bowl with water, add 5-15 drops of your favorite essential oil, and light the candle.  In a matter of minutes, your rooms will give you that emotional boost you’re looking for.

(Tip:  I personally prefer to use an electric burner)

3. Rug and Carpet Natural Disinfectant

Unfortunately, those carpets and area rugs you so carefully picked out soak up yucky odors like a sponge!  If you want your home to smell fresh and clean, you’ve got to disinfect them.  Sure, you’ve got cleaning products, but why not disinfect AND add a mood-boosting scent at the same time?!

Simply mix one cup of baking soda with 30 drops of your favorite essential oil.  Mix well, and spread the mixture onto your carpets and rugs.  Let it sit for an hour, and then vacuum it up.

No matter which method you choose, you’ll be able to take a deep breath and LOVE the way your home smells and feels!
