Can You Use Essential Oils Internally? Not a good idea

It sounds so easy — you just ingest some of your essential oils, and then you get to reap the benefits both inside and outside of your body!

But, unfortunately, it’s not nearly this simple. 

No matter what you’ve heard or read online, ingesting essential oils isn’t for everyone.  Before you even consider using them internally, you need the real story on how all of this works.

A lot of people ask me if are safe to use internally.  In the vast majority of cases, they’re asking me because they’ve spoken to a sales rep somewhere who claimed that only THEIR oils were safe enough to ingest.  No matter the company, the sales pitch is always the same — if you can’t use the essential oils internally, it’s because they’re not pure enough.

Here at Aromandina, we specifically put a warning on each of our bottles that says, “For External Use Only”.  It’s not because our oils aren’t “pure” enough, “safe” enough, or “good” enough.  It’s because essential oils are very powerful, and they need to be handled with care.

Don’t believe me?  Go grab a permanent marker and draw a line on your kitchen table. Then, use some water to try and get it off.  The marking won’t budge.  It also won’t budge if you use soap.  But if you apply one drop of lemon oil to your table, the ink will disappear.

Still want to drink that oil?

Sadly, a lot of salesmen claim that you can simply add a few drops of lemon oil to your glass of water and drink your way to all kinds of amazing benefits.  They claim that you can detox your system, all while enjoying a wonderful aroma.  However, oil and water don’t mix.  That means the lemon oil won’t dilute when you squeeze it into your glass, and you’ll be putting this powerful substance into your body in its original form.  If the oil can dissolve ink on your table, imagine what it can do to your mucous membranes!

Personally, in more than 20 years of using essential oils, I have ingested them only few times, for short periods of time and for a specific problem.  And I’ve done it because I’ve spent many years studying and practicing aromatherapy.  I’ve got the training and expertise to ingest these oils safely, but if you’re not an expert, it’s way too easy to make a mistake!

That’s why I carefully considered my customers’ skill levels when I first opened Aromandina.  I focused on techniques and recipes that would make it as easy as possible for you to get maximum results from your essential oils.   Quite honestly, you don’t NEED to take them internally to get great results!

So the next time you get hit with a sales pitch, remember that permanent marker on your kitchen table.  Some essential oils are stronger than others, some aren’t safe for kids, and some are too strong for certain skin types.  The last thing you want is to become a guinea pig for a sales rep who’s trying to convince you that their oils are the “most pure”.

 This is a matter of safety, not the quality or brand of essential oils.
