The Healing Power Of The Sense of Touch

One of the things I love about aromatherapy is that it uses the two senses that are most connected to the heart – the sense of smell and the sense of touch. Being from Latin America, I’m quite used to greeting friends with kisses and hugs, to touch and be touched, without feeling awkward or uncomfortable about it. That’s why moving to the United Sates came as sort of a culture shock. It took me some time to get accustomed to the more formal social etiquette and I had to sometimes stop myself from jumping to hug the person I was greeting. I have always been amazed with the power of our tactile senses and its incredible healing qualities. These qualities increase in potency when combined with the application of essential oils. I recently read an article on CNN that describes the benefits of touch for better mental, physical and emotional health. Scientific studies have proven that the simple massage can increase the number of white blood cells in our blood and help our bodies fight infection. The act of hugging, being hugged or holding hands is not only comforting and reassuring, it also stimulates the release of Oxytocin, the feel good hormone, that uplifts our mood and brings about a general feeling of wellbeing. Intimacy with a loved one is known to alleviate stress, anxiety, loneliness and depression. Our sense of touch is a divine gift that we must use towards our wellbeing as well as that of our loved ones. You can read the complete article here:
