People are always asking me for essential oil advice, and this time of year, many of them are begging for a solution to their dry skin, hair, and nails. So, I came up with a recipe that could eliminate all of those winter weather woes.
The secret ingredient? Coconut oil!
Here’s what makes it so great:
– It’s a powerful moisturizer
Without getting too technical, coconut oil’s chemical composition gives it the power to penetrate your skin much deeper than other moisturizers can. It goes so deep that it can actually strengthen your tissues — instead of just leaving a greasy layer of film on your skin.
– It sloughs away dead skin cells
After you rub it in, your skin will look soft, smooth, and radiant — instead of dry and flaky. Best of all, it does all of this without any harsh scrubbing!
– It’s not just good for skin
Coconut oil can have the same super-hydrating effects on your nails and hair.
But as powerful as coconut oil is, my moisturizer recipe harnesses the power of a few different essential oils. That way, you can see a variety of great results.
I mix together:
1 cup organic virgin coconut oil
15 drops of rose absolute
25 drops of orange
25 drops of frankincense
Rose absolute is a great emollient, meaning that it will make your skin super soft and supple.
Orange is particularly good at soothing extra-dry skin, so it’s the perfect choice for anyone who’s dealt with a harsh winter.
Frankincense actually stimulates your skin to create new cells — and those new cells look and feel a whole lot better than the old ones! It also fights off inflammation that makes your skin look and feel uncomfortable.
Once you blend everything together (and store it in an air-tight container) here’s the best way to use it:
– Exfoliate first
Coconut oil penetrates deep into your skin, but give it a helping hand by exfoliating dead cells beforehand. Mix a tablespoon of this moisturizer with a tablespoon of sugar to create an all-natural body scrub!
– Incorporate it into your bath routine
Massage this mixture into your hair before you wash it. Then, apply it to your skin and nails after you bathe — while they’re still warm and soft — so that it absorbs even better. Feel free to use it in place of your regular facial moisturizer, too.
